Printmaking is an old artistic process based on the principle of transferring images from a matrix onto another surface, most often paper or fabric.
There are five principal printmaking techniques: intaglio printing, relief printing, lithography, screenprinting and monotypes.
Intaglio printing is made by outlining an image on a printing surface (usually a copper, zinc, aluminum, magnesium, plastic matrix) by cutting, scratching, or etching it. The printing ink is rubbed into the incisions or grooves, and the surface is wiped clean. Unlike the relief printing, the intaglio printing requires enormous pressure in order to transfer the ink present into the incised lines onto the paper. That's why, for reaching such elevate pressures, for the intaglio printing the transfer is made by using an etching / intaglio press.
The most important working methods for intaglio printing are engraving, etching, drypoint, and mezzotint.
Relief printing is the opposite of the intaglio printing and is made by outlining an image on a surface (usually a linoleum or wood matrix) and then carving along the outline. Then, the block printing ink is applied on the raised areas, and subsequently the matrix is pressed onto a surface. These printmaking techniques are also known as linocut (lino print, lino printing or linoleum art) and woodcut.
